Building the most consistent arrows #archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

I know there is a lot of hype on this forum about spine indexed arrows. I have posted before about indexing your arrows to the spine and how it is NOT necessarily the most consistent setup. In fact your nocks and bushings along with how concentric the back of your arrow is has far more influence on your arrows POI. Now when I built my indoor arrows I went through and measured the inside of the arrow on both ends to find the most concentric end. I then cut 1" of the worst end and started cutting the best end down .5" at a time until the shaft was within .0015" or I got to my desired shaft length. If I was within .0015" then I cut the rest of the length of the other side. The goal for this was to have my nock end be on the straightest side of the arrow. After that I tested each shaft for the spine and marked the stiff side. Before gluing in bushings and points I used the G5 arrow squaring tool and squared both ends of my arrows.

I have shot these arrows al year and felt like maybe I did not need to go any farther. Well today I decided I was going to test my arrows with the hooter shooter. Although I was not completely surprised by the results, I was surprised at how inconsistent my arrows grouped when rotating my nocks. I was using a spot hogg hooter shooter auto draw and have found it to be substantially more consistent that the original auto draw and feel my results are very accurate. After rotating all 6 of my arrows into all 3 positions I got a triangle shaped group(to be expected) but to my surprise the group was 1.90" wide by 1.45" tall measuring outside to outside. After I finished group tuning I was able to get 5 of the 6 arrows to land in the same hole and one to hit slightly high right. If you would like me to write up my steps on how to do this I can. Afterwards I went back and retested my spine and found that 3 of my arrows had the stiff side to the left, 2 had the stiff side to the right and the one that I couldn’t quite get perfect had the stiff side up.

So bottom line here is if your components and the ends of your arrow are perfect(almost none are) then the spine aligned arrows will in fact group better. But the only way to truly get them shooting the most consistent is to tune them through a shooting machine. Also my arrows are rated as a .001" straightness for anyone wondering.

Question on draw weight vs. arrow weight, and why I think most have it wrong.

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

I have been seeing a lot of threads in regards to arrow weight and draw weight (in hunting applications), most of which say that when you drop draw weight you should, or at least most people do, drop arrow weight. To me this the total opposite of what I think you should do. I think that if you are going to drop draw weight then you need to INCREASE arrow weight to get the same terminal performance as someone shooting a faster arrow with increased draw weight. This has been shown to me more so through the example of my wife’s hunting setup then about anywhere else. I have seen her terminal performance suffer when we drop arrow weight down closer to IBO out of her setup. And I have seen extreme penetration gains when she shoots a heavy arrow. I have posted it here before, but I believe that when you decide to shoot lower draw weight, you are knowingly limiting yourself, and that is ok, heck that is why we archery hunt in the first place. When you shoot lower draw weight you are limiting yourself in regards to forgiveness of trajectory and range already so why not shoot a heavy arrow? What you are doing when shooting a heavy arrow(say anything from 450 up) out of a sub 50lb bow is turning that bow into a very powerful recurve. Think about how many animals including very large and dangerous one have fallen to traditional gear, and those guys thrive on heavy arrows and quality broad heads. I just don’t understand dropping arrow weight when dropping draw weight. Now I know there are exceptions; say you are already shooting a 600gr arrow out of your 70lb bow and decide to shoot a 440gr arrow out of your 60lb bow. That I get because your arrow weight, although lower then I like is still plenty heavy for most game. But examples like this are outside the norm. Now I would like to hear if and how you think I am wrong in this.

Most wicked Broadhead Ive ever seen

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

OK I cannot remember the exact name of the broadhead but the rep who set my new bow up today showed me what looks like a 3 leaf clover with a 1/4" chisel tip in the center now the 3 circles are heavy razors on the leading edge and broken on the outside center so its like 2 half circles facing each other for each leaf. Each leaf was 1/2"dia.+- and they shot it through a 1/2" pc of cabinet grade plywood so there were 3 circles going in the front face but the entire backside was blown out like a bullet hit it. In a foam target it punched out 3 perfect 1/2" circles of foam for the entire length of penetration they looked like ear plugs so massive bleeding and tissue dammage is in order. I believe the name was Hazard broadhead or biohazard broadhead as they look just like the bio hazard symbal for hazmat. Has anyone else seen or heard of these?
