Thorn RIFT 100gr 2.2″ Failure? #archery

The Thorn RIFT 100gr 2.2" with black crossbow sheer pin hit
this 150lb buck at 30 yds and left an approximately 1” cut through
the entry side of the rib cage and an identically-sized 1” cut through
the exit side of the opposite rib cage.
The Thorn left my ] tuned Scorpyd Extreme Cam Velocity
on top of a 24” Victory Voodoo VAP in the neighborhood of 440fps.
The terminal performance appears in the below pics and includes:
A huge, gaping 5” wide cut in one lung and a similar
Huge 4” cut in the other;
A tiny, thumb-sized entry wound on one side of the heart, and
A similar, tiny wound on the other side of the heart.
The only huge exit wound that appears to be the advertised 2.2”
is where the Thorn exited the opposite side of the chest, and
potentially only after it hit the hide on the other side.
Because, as above, the entry and exit wounds in the rib cage
are each an identical 1” in size.
I am not thrilled with this Thorn performance
because had I not recovered that buck where I did,
recovering him would have been difficult or impossible.
Because of the huge cuts in the lungs
I would like to believe the Thorn opened properly on the heart,
however, the Thorn was not properly opened when it exited the heart.
Therefore, I cannot explain why the various internal wounds
are so different in size?
The Thorn opens when tiny tabs on the leading edge of each blade
pushes that outwards and in the opposite direction.
Since shooting I have played with this broadhead and now wonder
whether the issue might lie with in high velocities with which I shot?
Because at high velocity perhaps with the patented “RIP-TIP” being
square across the front could possibly create a hole larger
than the ferrule.
This larger-than-ferrule hole would then not allow each tiny leading
blade edge(s) to make contact with the target tissue and bone
thus, preventing advertised deployment?
I wonder whether the velocity might be the issue here,
because the Thorn, in its least deployed posture,
appears to be the same width as the entry and exit cuts through the ribcage.
I may try Thorn’s in my crossbow again and I may not …Click image for larger version.

Of Your Misses… Poor Execution, Missed Yardage, Equip Failure? #archery

For those that are man enough to admit you’ve messed up a few shots at game… was it because of:

A. Poor Shot Execution
B. Miss Judged Yardage
C. Equipment Failure

Of the few I shot at and missed, or hit and didn’t recover, most of mine have fallen in the "Poor Shot" category. Can’t remember a time when I have missed because of equipment failure… Once due to miss judging the yardage. Most came when I was a beginner and couldn’t control the nerves [emoji23]…

R&W target failure

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

I read about how great R&W targets are on this site and after speaking with the owner I decided to give 1 a try before I bought a few of them. Well the MS Alert Deer showed up yesterday and today I put 12 arrows into it from 40 yards. Sadly, I looked at the back of the target and found it was pretty tore up, see pics. Emailed the company and hope they make things right, we’ll see. I’ll post updates.

Luminok failure?

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

Has anyone had a luminok short out from getting wet from blood? I shot a spike last night and it worked fine I thought as the deer took off, figured it just ran out of sight of the red glow. I backed out and waited a few hours. A buddy and I blood tracked in the dark for an hour to find the deer 150 yards out with the lumenok not lit. I could have seen it drop had the nock stayed lit. I cleaned the nock up and now it works fine.
