In December I started a thread about tanning your own deer hide. Well I attempted the process and finally finished it. The result was a soft and supple hide with more than its fair share of nicks from fleshing. Given the interest in the project I decided to document it mid way through. Like any project there are lessons learned and mine are listed below;
1. Take your time fleshing
2. Purchase the right tool for the job (fleshing knife and fleshing board)
3. Be really careful while skinning the tail
Over all I’m please with how it turned out. I just wish I didn’t have so many darn holes to sew. Now that I’ve gone through the process once I feel I could do a better job the next time around.
For those that are interested the process can be viewed via the following link;
