Diamond SB-1 for 20 year old? #archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

Hello all, first I would like to introduce myself! I’ve been browsing the site for quite a while but just decided to join today. My name is GetZum and I am a 20 year old avid outdoorsman from Nebraska, USA. I have been researching bows quite intensely for a few months and have come to the conclusion that a Diamond bow is probably my best bet on a college budget. I have read really nothing but great reviews on these bows (specifically the SB-1) but everyone only says they are great for growing shooters. I was wondering if anyone had experience or opinions on these bows for someone such as myself who is done growing but still wants a reasonably priced well performing bow. I plan to hunt deer, turkey, and someday perhaps elk for reference. Any advice is helpful and please feel free to ask any questions i may have to covered!

“The Freak” is Down, 18 pts – 4 year Quest #archery

I started getting pictures of this buck in 2014. That year I figured him to be 2.5 years old. He got shot that year by a neighbor and had a big hole in his back which left a big scar for the next few years, making him easy to recognize. The next year (2015) he started putting on kickers and a nice droptine but still wasn’t big enough or old enough to shoot. He broke his leg this same year somehow and had a major limp. His leg was permanently broke for the rest of his life and could barely walk, but he somehow survived. 2016 he blew up and put on a ton of trash with just a crazy looking rack, I guess due to the injuries. Then this year he actually went downhill and didn’t get as big. If not for the scar and broken leg, he would’ve been almost unrecognizable due to his rack changes so much. I shot him November 5th but hit him too high in the back and didn’t kill him. Then finally on December 30th I was able to put him down and put an end to the 4 year wait.

Is it a dream, or am I really hunting Pike County Illinois this year! What to expect? #archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

I have always dreamed of killing a trophy Midwest Whitetail, and it seems to be one step closer as I booked a hunt in Griggsville, Illinois (Pike County) with an Outfitter from October 29 – November 4th for this season. They list this as their most expensive hunt and best rut of the year. As it gets closer, I am trying to begin getting things in order, and make sure that I get the most out of my hunt. For every bit of excitement, I am just as nervous though as this is the first outfitter hunt I have ever been on. I have been shooting daily for the last 3 months, and I am absolutely deadly out to around 50 yards. From hunting East Texas my whole life to this hunt couldn’t be any more different. Any advice for the upcoming trip? Some of the things I have questions about, or am concerned about are:

1. Weather- I own a lot of hunting clothes, but I am concerned I will not be warm. What sort of temperature am I looking at for that time of year? Solid idea to invest in some nice stuff?

2. Grunt Call- I have never really used a grunt call, but have read a lot of places that it might be a solid idea to learn.. do any of you have a specific grunt call you recommend? I really don’t want to watch a 180" deer run does across food plots all week long , and can’t get into bow range.

3. I am planning on hunting ALOT.. I mean, daylight till dark every day. Do deer move mid day this time of year?

4. Just how big of deer are in Pike County Illinois? They are posting some monsters from their cameras, but I am curious as to how common a 150" kill is up there? My biggest buck to date is a 139" buck.

I appreciate the advice in advance fellas.

Not my year! #archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

This past deer season was nothing to talk about. Never saw a shooter from stand and my target buck was shot and wounded by a xbow hunter. Now it’s Turkey season and this past Tuesday I called one in and misjudged distance and shot right under him (put him inside 20 and he was 28). Then this morning I call a big Tom in, I had him hold up behind the blind for 5 min until I added movement to my dsd jake. He circled the blind and I came to full draw. I was trying to aim for the head but he was moving too fast then I saw black and punched the trigger. The shot was 5yds and I shot the blind but arrow still blew thru him. He cartwheeled for 50yds and I’m thinking he’s smoked, then at the 51st yd he gets his composure and walks off and out of sight. I get out of the blind a few later and hope he piled up in the brush he was headed to but he didn’t. I never heard him run off but given it had just rained it didn’t expect to. I searched for a few hours in the immediate location and ended up bumping a bird that flew off. Now my gut drops and I call a friend. He comes over and we search and end up going the way the flyer went. In the meantime it starts to pour. We are 3 hrs into it and I have no clue where my friend went but I wanted to check one last spot that’s about 150yds from the shot. I was going thru dead fall and a thicket of 6ft pines and my Tom pops out 10yds from me, I go towards him and he runs right by me and the chase begins. He goes down a ravine and this 225lb fat ***** is gaining on him, then we reach the bottom and the bird doesn’t slow down going up the steep hill but I sure as hell did. I’m half way up the hill and he crests the top and I lose sight. I stop like an idiot. Then I realize what I did and start back up hill and when I crest it there’s no bird. He couldn’t fly because It looked like I broke his wing. There’s a 8ft fence so he could only go left or right. I get in touch with my friend and have him walk from the right side hoping the bird went that way and he’d push him back to me. 20 minutes go by and I see my friend but no bird. When he gets to me I tell him to stay where I was and I’d go and circle to try and get in front of the bird. I made a good loop keeping tabs at everything towards the fence. Never saw the bird again. We looked for several more hours and gave up. I feel horrible about wounding a bird and wish it didn’t end this way. In the last 5 seasons I’ve been fortunate enough to harvest 3 P&Y bucks and have taken a bird every year probably for the last decade and tagged out (3) a few years ago. I guess it’s time to smell the coffee or roses or however the saying goes and accept the fact that I’VE LOST MY EDGE!!!

For the record, this is not a fenced in area, there are sections of fence put up to reduce vehicle and deer collisions.

Thanks for letting me rant!

Anyone else not get out this year?

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

During hunting season we bought a house, moved, did some remodeling on the old house so long story short no time for hunting this season. Seems like the last several years between work and other things my time in the woods has decreased. Anyone else?
