Which Bow Would You Buy? #archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

I’m looking to upgrade my brother’s hunting bow this Christmas. I’m looking in the $ 300-$ 450 range for a ready to shoot, used setup. The bow that comes to mind immediately is a Switchback XT, but they tend to sell on the upper end of that range. What are some other bows that I should consider? I realize that the possibilities are really endless, but I’d like to get a bow in the same class as the Switchback XT if possible. Thanks!

How Would You Hunt?

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

Well, I was lucky enough to have been given permission to hunt a very large group of properties (over 800+ acres) right before bow season starts this coming Monday. With a limited amount of other hunters allowed on the property, I’m thrilled to have been given the oppurtunity to say the least. Being last minute, I have done ZERO scouting and besides topo and aerial maps, know nothing about the land. What I know is that it’s made up mostly woods with multiple creeks winding through and some swamp land. No fields/Ag land.

So, can anyone give me advice or their opinion on how I should go about hunting land I have’nt had the oppurtunity to scout? Has anyone gone in "blind" and had any success? I know there is no golden ticket to this, but would like to see if anyone has any advice I can take into consideration. Thanks & God Bless.

I just picked up a Bowtech Invasion wondering if 400 spine arrows will work out of it.

Bowtech Invasion shooting 60lb. 28" draw
Arrows are 27 3/4 nock throat to end 100g tips

I am thinking the 400′s are going to be a little weak. Might need an excuse to get new arrows

Thanks

How would you hunt this thick wooded mountainous property?

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

A family member recently bought this house on a piece of land a little less than 200 acres in upstate New York and gave me permission to hunt it.

The lack of obvious hunting spots based off the topos is giving me a bit of trouble trying to figure out how I should hunt it.

The entire property is pretty thick hard woods, mix of pines, oaks, etc…The bottom edge of the property borders a road and reservoir. The roads that are on the map in the middle of the property are not there in real life.. must be some sort of map error. The left half of the property is a pretty steep mountain face- not too steep to walk, but a pretty serious incline. There are about 4 or 5 well cleared but unused logging trails that run across flat ridges that are parallel to the main road-these logging trails are spaced pretty evenly from bottom to top. To the direct left of the property is a small farm with 8-10 apple trees that the deer feed on in night. Above the house, a power line runs through the woods- this is the only spot on the property that a deer has been taken thus far(Two decent 8 pointers, two consecutive years).

Upon first glance of these terrain maps, does anyone see some potential areas to further investigate. Is topographic analysis even useful on a property like this? Or in general, have any tips to hunt thick mountainous woods like this?

I got permission to hunt this really good land. west side of creek is public and I am the only one who has permission to hunt east side. Can you all give me your advice of where to hunt on this land and when? I don’t want to go in in the dark and risk blowing them out of the field. Or is there a way in where I don’t have to worry? I need all the help I can get.mound.jpg

Would you Rather?????

Close the deal on trophy buck that you have a history with OR take an equally, perhaps even slightly better trophy who just happened by your stand?

Why?

This is not intended to be the "rather be lucky than good" type of deal, more of a you have a history with a buck whether it is a long or short one, whether it involves shed antlers, trail cam shots, previous close encounters, etc…you make the call….

Would you rather pass up a similar to even slightly better deer, to hold out for your "white whale" or do you take what comes by first and presents the best shot? Why

This is a tough call for me because I stayed in pursuit of my white whale for four seasons, before he was finally taken as a 6 year old on a neighboring property by a different hunter. At that point he score over 190", yes a PA, public land buck over 190". During that four year period I passed SEVERAL deer that would to this day rank as my best PA buck. In fact, when I learned of this buck getting taken and finally saw the buck myself, I went out the next night in 2010 and shot the first buck that came by….a typical 120" 8-point. Not sure why I did that considering I had passed on a couple in the 140-150 range earlier that season, but I guess I let the agony of defeat get to me…Guess what I did in 2012, started again with target buck and guess what, I haven’t taken a PA buck since?? I lost the 2013 season to a hunting accident, passed on several in 2014. I did have an exciting encounter last fall with a great buck and if things would have turned out just slightly different, I likely would have had a PA buck to challenge the score of my KS buck, but we’ve all had those oh, so close encounters.

This year I have had a lot on my plate, more than I could have ever imagined with my own health, my daughter’s health, my wife’s auto-accident, etc…I have had less than 5 sits this year. While I have had deer in range all but one of those sits, I have yet to punch my tag. I certainly don’t feel like I’m "on the deer" with my usual fervor and almost feel as though I am going to have to be lucky to get something this year as my scouting has been impacted tremendously.

All of this got me to thinking, am I going to pass a decent PA buck this year in hopes of my recent standard or am I going to hold out?

Joe

Spooked big buck. What would you do? Seeking strategy.

Hey All!

Sweet evening hunt today in a swamp. Saw the two nicest bucks I’ve seen while hunting (which doesn’t say much as I’ve only been doing this a few years, but still I’m pretty pumped). Left me with a conundrum.

In the last few minutes of good light, the nicest buck I’ve seen showed up and stopped about 10 yards away. I hunt from a saddle now, and was hanging from a big leaning oak that hangs over an opening in the swamp, at the tip of a sort of point of woods that just into the swamp. I put the tree between me and him, and I drew. As I did, he turned facing me, and looked right in my direction. Busted. Sorta. I waited at full draw for him to write me off and go back to eating. And then I waited some more. When I couldn’t hold anymore, I counted to twenty and held some more. He was still frozen, looking right at me. Eventually I let down as slow as I could, and he jumped a little, and moved out of my line of site. I peeked around really slowly, and he was staring right at me. The peeking was too much for him. He didn’t like it and bounded into the brush without too much rush, and was gone. No snorting or stomping. And not really frantic. I listened, and it seemed like he didn’t go too far. I let the light fade some more, and, with it all quite, I eased out of there as silently as I could.

What’s my plan of attack now? Do I return immediately? Give it a rest? Hunt it in the morning?

More background:
- Tonight there was another shooter buck there (second nicest one I’ve seen while hunting). He didn’t present a shot. He didn’t spook, but chased off after some does and was gone. I’d return just for him, but now I’ve seen the bigger dude, and want him more.
- Weather (wind, temp, barometric pressure, etc.) are all supposed to be the same tomorrow and Tuesday.

So what would you do?

J
