Using turkey decoys in the woods #archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

So this year I’m trying something different. I am focusing on hunting in the woods and hunting turkeys like I do deer instead of hunting field edges exclusively. Just pick a spot and sit there for a long time.

It almost worked out the first try. I setup on the top of a steep ridge. It’s a tough walk but I always had trail cam pics of turkeys there so I figured I would give it a shot. Within an hour I had 4 jakes come in down the ridge. They saw the decoys and got scared and hung up just out of range.

While the jakes came in I had some toms and hens come in from below me. They were 40 yards away but did not come close enough for a shot. The same thing happened a little later with a few more toms. All the birds were responding to my calls, even the hens. But they wouldn’t come close enough for a shot.

I was using a decoy with a jake fan and a hen decoy. They saw the decoys but wouldn’t come in. In fact, I think had I not had he decoys I’d have at least gotten a shot at one of the jakes. Am I better off not using decoys in the woods?

whitetail strategy for tight woods?

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

This past year was my first year archery hunting, and first year in New Hampshire. Only saw two deer, and I’m looking to increase my odds for next year. I’m happy to take a doe, young buck…if it’s brown, it’s going down.

I live in Amherst, New Hampshire, southern part of the state. The houses are on 1-3 acre lots, bordered by 120 acres of swamp-land, public conservation land. No agricultural fields anywhere nearby. I think my problem is that deer are EVERYWHERE, but nowhere in particular. They’re snuffling through the snow for acorns in my front yard overnight, piles of droppings scattered throughout the woods. Huge network of trails and sign, but no single heavily-used trail. They’re very comfortable working people’s yards, decimating their landscape plants. One guy has a row of arborvitae that are stripped bare, right up to 7 feet high. There is one fairly large grass meadow, but I haven’t seen any sign there. Mix of timber, most of it less than 50 years old: hemlocks, white pine, sugar maples, red oaks and a few white oaks. Acorn drop was epic this year, walking in my yard was like skating on a rink full of marbles.

As far as bedding, I saw two spots on my walk today: one isolated bed between some fallen timber not 30 yards from my house, and what looked like a triple doe bed right off one of the heavier trails, in a pretty thick hemlock stand. There is also plenty of bedding sign in the swamp bordering the brook. There’s about a 40 yard buffer between the timber line and the brook, filled with nasty bittersweet, swamp maples, sedge and cattails chest-high. I tried to sneak up there in my stand twice last season and got easily busted. There are an infinite number of escape routes, and the deer seem well distributed in scattered beds, not beating down the same spots every night.

So I’m looking for some tips on how to hunt this landscape, where there’s no well-worn path between a bedding thicket and a soybean field. The deer seem to have a web of interconnecting trails, and if they sense any danger, they just use the next one over.

My buddy has plenty of nighttime trail cam shots but just a few during daylight shooting hours. He suggested to setup a bait pile off the trail behind my house, which I may try, but I’m looking for some more strategies on how to set myself up for success during Sept.15-Dec.15 during shooting hours. Any ideas?

Shed hunting big woods

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

Has anyone had any luck with the big woods in northern Wisconsin? Ever doing I go out and look and look and look but never find a single thing. I am tempted to try early this year with the snow in the ground and hopefully find some new areas to hunt and maybe some sheds

Question is where should I start ? The area is full if swamps oaks and draws and the deer just kind of vanish once the snow fly’s. I know some spring – fall bedding areas but I have never found a shed near or around them.

Public Land Big Woods

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

Hello Everybody,
I have a question regarding hunting on public land here in Missouri, it is a 7000 acre piece comprised of large ag fields on the ridge tops and deep valleys and draws with creek bottoms. My delimma is that I have been hunting the AG fields on top and havent been seeing much for activity until last light. All the deer that is being seen and killed by other hunters has been in the creek bottoms and deep draws, Im new to hunting this type of terrain and Im in need of some advice on how to properly hunt this area. Ive always hunted in the river bottoms and havent got the expertise for this form of hunting ground. I will gladly take any advise you can offer and look forward to hear some good stradigies.
Thanks
Ron
