IL bird down this morning – full video and pic heavy

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

I put in for 2 IL turkey tags and got drawn for 1st season and 3rd season. My first tag made some terrible soup, but by the end of my last day hunting, we had about figured them out. I wasn’t sure if I was going to make it back over for the 3rd season tag because it started the same day as our MO season. I decided last night to head over for the morning as it looked like probably the only good weather day left in my season. We decided to set up where we heard several birds the last time I hunted and as I got out of the truck, we found out they were already gobbling. We managed to get set up in the field adjacent to the little patch of woods while they gobbled the entire time within 100 yards of us. Soon we could hear some hens talking and even seen them fly down towards the closest 2 gobblers. I decided right then that I would be the most aggressive hen around there, hoping to get the hens fired up enough to come check us out. It worked, and soon we had two hens with us in the field. One happened to have a thick 10 or so inch beard.

It didn’t take long for one of the gobblers to follow them out along with another hen. What a sight he was with the rising sun behind us hitting his feathers! I will let the video tell the rest of the story:

A few pix. He was a great bird, with three beards of 11 1/8, 6 1/8, and 4 inches, 24 lbs even, and 1.25 inch spurs on both sides. He actually broke a spur on the deke but it was still attached.

What are you planting this year?

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

This weekend I started on putting my food plot in. I’m wore out, and am so glad Farmers do a lot of the hard work to get food on my table. Farming is not for me. I’m ready to put down some 13-13-13 and my seed mix. In September I’ll put some Radish around it for winter food. So what is everyone else putting in? And have you started? This is getting White tail Institute No-plow formula.

Is this normal?

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

So I’ve been shooting for about 2 months.

Have had a Halon 6 for about two weeks.

In the past 4 days I have wrecked 3 brand new arrows.

This is actually the 4th time since I started.

Now I know my shots aren’t hitting exactly where I want, so no need to mention that. 🙂

This might be a good feeling if I was sinking a dead center bullseye into another, but this isn’t the case.

Just wondering if I should start buying cheaper arrows or expect this to be a regular expense.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Has anyone used one of these yet? I was looking at one at scheels this weekend and was thinking it might work. The thing is huge but doesn’t weigh much more than a pound or 2.

How would you hunt this thick wooded mountainous property?

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

A family member recently bought this house on a piece of land a little less than 200 acres in upstate New York and gave me permission to hunt it.

The lack of obvious hunting spots based off the topos is giving me a bit of trouble trying to figure out how I should hunt it.

The entire property is pretty thick hard woods, mix of pines, oaks, etc…The bottom edge of the property borders a road and reservoir. The roads that are on the map in the middle of the property are not there in real life.. must be some sort of map error. The left half of the property is a pretty steep mountain face- not too steep to walk, but a pretty serious incline. There are about 4 or 5 well cleared but unused logging trails that run across flat ridges that are parallel to the main road-these logging trails are spaced pretty evenly from bottom to top. To the direct left of the property is a small farm with 8-10 apple trees that the deer feed on in night. Above the house, a power line runs through the woods- this is the only spot on the property that a deer has been taken thus far(Two decent 8 pointers, two consecutive years).

Upon first glance of these terrain maps, does anyone see some potential areas to further investigate. Is topographic analysis even useful on a property like this? Or in general, have any tips to hunt thick mountainous woods like this?

New to this, need arrow advice

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

So I just bought my first bow….a bear crux. While in gander mountain a guy let me shoot one off the rack and set it up for me knowing I didn’t buy from him which I thought was great customer service. However, I don’t know anything about arrows or how to pick them. So how do I? My draw length is 27.5 @70lbs. Not sure if that helps. How do I know what arrows, length, spine, weight, fletches, ect? Sorry for the new question…I couldn’t find the answer.

I just bought my first bow, but there’s a flaw on a limb. Is this dangerous?

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

It’s been strung and unstrung once, never fired though.

I’ve never owned a bow before and was reading up in how to inspect limbs for damage that can happen from use, what to look for. Delamination, splintering, and stuff like that.

I found a site recommending feeling over every inch of the limbs for any rough spots (there shouldn’t be any)

Anyway, I tried that with mine, which I just got and noticed a line on the side of the limb of a rough patch of spongy looking wood. (Or possibly just wood that has some deep pits that are full of foamy glue/air bubbles?)

Is this something that would be a problem, or just a normal thing?

This is a samik sage recurve.
