Pre shooting warm up … do you or don’t you

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

I’ve been asked by my archery club coaches to put together a warm up program for our junior archers. The reasoning behind the request is to prepare the archers for their shooting sessions and of course reduce the potential risk of injury. To prepare the program, I’ve been looking through the published medical literature to identify any specific warm up activities and their effectiveness in reducing injury. There’s a conflict of opinion within the medical literature as to the effectiveness of warm ups but there’s a growing consensus that sport specific warm up exercises improve performance.
So, although there may not be definitive evidence to support the use of warm ups to prevent injury, there’s an accepted conventional wisdon that warm ups have no negative connotations.
The question I’d like to ask here is, …. do you warm up before shooting?, if you do, what benefit to you derive from it? If you don’t warm up, I’d like to ask why not?

First time shooting sightless

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

Hello everyone! I’m still new here. I used to shoot a 45# Bear recurve similar to this one, but not exactly(it was like 12 years ago…). I became extremely proficient over the course of a long summer in the back yard, putting 4 arrow groupings in a soda can hung in the middle of a bail of straw at 35 yards. Thing was, I always used a set of sights(15yds, 25yds, 35yds).

Now recently I have gotten back into the hobby. I found a cheap 40# PSE Stalker. I’m honestly not as fond of the takedown design as I was with the solid one piece design of my old bow, but it seems to shoot well, so it will be a great starter. This time around I am teaching myself to shoot sightless, and what is happening seems very weird…

At 15 yards, I HAVE TO resort to 3U, instead of split finger, just to have the target inside my sight-view(I guess thats what it’s called). If I try to shoot split finger, then the target is behind the upper limb. And the really weird part is, whether I shoot from 15, 25, or 35 yards, I always have to aim the EXACT same way. If I adjust for longer distance, I overshoot. So every shot I take at any of those distances, the tip of my arrow is the same "gap" under the target to hit.

My best guess is either I have some mystical arrows with a wonderfully flat trajectory, or else I am minutely adjusting my draw length without realizing it(instinctively??). Any ideas or tips?

***BTW I read of this forum a tip about angling your fingers down 30 degrees when you shoot 3U, and WOW that works great.

bareshaft tuning a sage shooting 3 under?

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

As a newb I have been watching and reading like crazy over the last few weeks on archery. I have not found anything on bareshaft tuning with a 3 under shooting style. How will this affect my results. If someone knows a good link that would be appreciated. I have a 45# sage with a 26 1/4 drawlength. Figure on 500 -600 shaft but would like to shoot the heaviest feasible broadhead for deer ( 165 to 175 grains I’m guessing). Any input is greatly appreciated.

Finger Shooting. Will this arrow tune?

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

Several months ago I saw a thread that listed certain arrows that would never tune to a fingers shooter. I remember that the author seemed to be a respected authority on this issue. Does this ring a bell with any of you? I’d like to find that old thread. I’m shooting a Mathews Ovation with fingers and my Easton FMJ’s just don’t seem as shooter friendly as my Pile Drivers did. Hence my reason for wanting to find this old thread. Thank you

I guess I’ll soon be shooting naked!

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

I keep robbing my clothes in the closet to fill my target. I tamp the stuff down and try a few arrows to see how they are penetrating and then go get a few more shirts and pants. Its gonna be embarassing pretty soon if I don’t get this target packed tight enough to stop the arrows to a depth of 5 to 7"…..I’ll be in my birthday suit and I don’t know tooth or toenail how to get it really tight except keep on packing……….

Help me out, bow shooting left!

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

I’m shooting a 2011 Pulse 29/60, and just picked it up today from the shop after they tuned it to spec. I paper tuned it at the shop, and it shot great, I got it back home, and it’s shooting 3"-4" left, and I have no left windage adjustment left. I moved my rest right just a bit, and it did move the shot right a touch, but it’s still shooting left, and my sight is still way left of center.

Help me out, please!

Recurve shooting day #3

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

Things really came together today! Paper plate groups at 20 yards. 6" groups at 17yards. I finally got the anchor and release right. Moved to 30 yards and was 60%. Got dared to try one from 40 and got lucky and put the first one in the 8 ring. Didn’t try any more.:)

Now I’m standing there getting ready to loose an arrow feeling a lot better about the whole bare bow/stick and string shooting thing and I hear a crackle. Owned it less than a week with less than 500 arrows through it and I bust a limb on my Razorback. Insert expletives!

I can handle the #’s easy enough now and am pretty close to being hunting proficient inside of 20 yards. Do I have them replace the limbs or do I have them give me a store credit and move up to a different bow @ 40#’s?

Recurve shooting day #2

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

I didn’t lose any arrows today!

I tried some stuff with the release hand. When I went to three fingers it worked better with an anchor point a little further back, has to be something with geometry of the fingers in a different spot. Precision improved, repeatable accuracy went down, I had more fliers. When I did have a miss it was usually high and I could tell as soon as it left b/c my index finger was feeling a lot more pressure. At this point it’s a draw between the two types. I’ll have to do more work but want to get the feel for three for when I move up in #’s.

I noticed when I thought less about the mechanics of the shot and paid more attention of the feel of the draw while I visually burned a hole in the bulls-eye my groups where better, was able to get paper plate groups at 14 yards vs. 10 yards on my first day. Less thinking = better results, weird.

Next I got out my compound, boring repeatability. Shot eight arrows in a row in the ten ring and put it away. I didn’t expect this either. The arrows are in the target nearly the same time I think fire though which is probably the only thing that will keep it off 3bay.
