2017 ground hunter’s thread! #archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

Figured I’d start a thread for the new season.

This thread is for everything: Still-hunting/Spot-n-Stalk/Natural ground blind hunting related.

Here’s a few threads from the past about the topic!

http://www.archerytalk.com/vb/showth…ground+hunting

This year is finally going to be my first season seriously attempting to still hunt, and hunt with a ghille suit. I know I’m going to make mistakes, and I’ll be looking for advice along the way! I grew up hunting on the ground back in the 90′s. mostly natural ground blinds, and some still hunting. I recently sold my last treestand, Just so there would be NO temptation of tree hunting! I also recently purchased a recurve crossbow, so I can also lay prone in mountain laurel patches along some travel corridors. I hunt 10,000 acres of public land. I grew up hunting these woods. These are the type of hardwoods that if you see a deer, you’ev had an awesome day! to put it into perspective, last year I didn’t see a single deer in a hunting situation. It’s a very rough go. I DO know how to hunt, however this is completely normal for these woods. there ARE deer there, and big bucks too. Archery season has very little pressure. In the 90′s there was always a small group of people bowhunting it.

I’m also looking at getting this bad Larry, but I have a sever case of sticker shock right now!

Talk about being able to hunt anywhere!

I also have been a HUGE fan of G. Fred Asbell’s book:

Over the years I have practiced his "woods walking" technique when i go near bedding areas.

This book is ok…not that great

Anyways, just looking forward to my still hunt this friday afternoon!

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

I see that there are hunters saftey courses in Pa along with bow hunters saftey courses. Is it required that I take the bow hunters saftey course or is the regular hunters saftey course fine or should I take both. I’m not sure what the law requires. Thanks for your help and replies.

question for merriams turkey hunters #archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

Just finished a successful DIY hunt for Merriams and where I was I noticed the beards considerably thinner that what I see on Easterns back home. Lengths seemed in line, jw if that is common for Merriams.

Also I’m in need of some tail feathers to fix mine up. He was a little beat up. If anyone has some or expects to get one and isn’t using the tail please get in touch with me.

Ridiculous

Quote:

The New York City Parks Department plans to sterilize all male deer roaming Staten Island, starting with a $ 2 million effort during this fall’s rutting season. Hundreds of bucks would be given vasectomies and released back onto the borough during the three-year study. The goal is to sterilize all of the male deer (about 40% of the herd, an estimated 400 bucks) over a several year period. This amounts to about $ 5,000 per buck if they sterilize all of them in the first year.

Let’s come together as hunters – Website Idea – Hunt Sharing

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

So this idea came to be a while back. I’ve had some experience building websites for political campaigns and have made some forums a long time ago. I posted this idea on a facebook group i’m on and it got some good feedback, figured this would be a wider scope to talk about it here.

The website/ forum/ whatever would be a way for hunters to connect and "hunt share" with other people with comparable land. The idea really kicked off for me when I started asking around locally if anyone had land in kansas where Rio’s were the main turkey to harvest. With no leads, and not wanting to drop $ 1,500 on an outfitter I started to think to myself that SOMEONE in kansas would let me hunt their land if I let them hunt mine. Better yet, I’m SURE I could find someone in florida, and someone in Nebraska that has access to Meriams and Osceola’s that would like to hunt my farm for turkeys or whitetails.

So the website would go something like this. You would make a profile, which includes information on what you want to hunt, what you have access too, and all the details. I hope this makes sense. The point is to make inter-state hunting as cheap as possible. Get 2,3,4 or more people on board that all hunt together on different properties that THEY own, and you’ve got a pretty sweet year ahead of you. So i’ll make a quick example.

Hunter 1 – Lives in Missouri, has a 400 acre farm with good turkey population and frequent 130-150 inch whitetails.
Hunter 2 – Lives in Ohio. Has a 600 acre farm with good turkey population and frequent 140-160 inch whitetails.
Hunter 3 – Lives in Montana. Has access to 2000 acres with black bear and Elk.
Hunter 4 – Lives in Nebraska. Has 1000 acre farm with antelope and turkey.

These four hunters collaborate on said website, and before you know it, you have access to three new states and 4 new species that you’ve never hunted before. All you have to do is buy your out of state tag. This would also encourage hunters to take better care of their land, put in food plots, pass on smaller animals, etc. You could even have a record of animals and sizes taken on each land. So if a Hunter 5 pops up and says he would like in on the action, but doesn’t have much to bring to the table, the other hunters can decide together if they want to pass on it or not.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Does something like this already exist?
