Deer – Great Escapes #archery

Who has experienced a deer hiding from another hunter, or caught a deer pulling a fast one over on yourself. They can be slick, and some of it may even sound unbelievable. Share your stories.

Once, I heard a deer come into a patch of bulrush to bed just before first light. I was pretty sure it was the dominant buck in the area that I was after. A few hours later a group of bird hunters drove the bulrush with their dogs. The buck took a few leaps out of there, and into a thorn thicket just a few yards to my left. I could only make out his right antler sticking out past his ear. He stood motionless as the hunters passed by, 10-20 yards away, yelling at the dogs. One dog was barking at a pheasant in the top of the cedar to my right, and never picked up on the deer. After they left, the buck walked up through the thicket, and back into the bulrush.

While stillhunting through knee high grass during gun season, I saw antlers moving along the top of the grass about 10yds away, going in the opposite direction. He must have been crawling. I picked the gun up as he went behind a chest high clump of briers, and waited for him to come out the other side…and waited…and waited…, never to see him again. Only explanation I could come up with was he turned 90* and kept that brush between us as he crawled off.

Keeping this topic on top.

I think that Steven Rinella is pretty much universally liked here on AT so here is a great article on public lands transfer and HR 622.

New String & Cables Opinion – Great!

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

I want to give a quick compliment and recommendation to 60xcustomstrings. I ordered my first set of string & cables from 60X they are a BYC X package, and I installed them about a week and a half ago. My first impression was they were a good looking set, very tight serving, and length right at spec….they just looked great.

The really cool thing was after I sent my bow to spec. trying to be very meticulous about cam timing and ATA, etc. I shot for about a week. I never noticed any peep rotation or the cams coming out of time like I would expect for a normal sting set to settle in the first 100 shots or so. I wanted to give my bow a good inspection this weekend and to my surprise the bow was the exact spec as is set before ATA, BH, and cams in time. The noting moved at all! That was the first time for me installing a new set where nothing moved. Time will tell on longevity but I very happy right now.

Also I was very happy with performance of the bow. The draw weight measured out right at 70LBS and my long drawn length at 31 inches had my Hoyt Nitrum 34 shooting a 460 grain arrow and 302 FPS.

Looking for great taxidermist within 2hr drive from Albany, NY

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

Hey all,
I am looking for a taxidermist with great skills within a 2hr drive from Albany NY. As you may have seen, I have another thread started about a mount I just got back that I am not happy with. I am looking for a taxidermist that can remount it. The cape probably cannot be reused so I will most likely need a new cape. Also, one of the tines was repaired by the other taxidermist…it is o.k. BUT could use some touch up. My criteria is a taxidermist who can do a great job and make this deer mount look much better. You can find pictures in this thread http://www.archerytalk.com/vb/showthread.php?t=2279297.
Thanks!
