Going on our first elk hunt and DIY at that!!!

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

Been lurking in the shadows for the last couple years and decided to finally join the forum and making my first post so here goes. A friend and I are going on our first elk hunt this year, well his second or third and my first. Bad part is he hasn’t been in 15 years (since he was in high school) and we don’t know exactly what to bring or where to go. We are going on a backcountry hunt and probably wont set up a base camp. we know we will have to get way back in there and are ok with that. I have been searching the web for the last 3 weeks trying to do some research and thought I might as well give up on the lists everyone has posted because to be honest we don’t have a ton of cash and most of them are listing the most top of the line gear and we cant really afford that. so wondering what most people use (looking like red head and cabelas gear, not Sitka and what not although he does have some bad lands stuff and I do have some UA barrier gear). I know shelter, sleeping bag, pad, pack and boots are all top priority which we have but I have to get boots still. Looking at mendle denali boots, danner pronghorns, and UA Ridge Reaper but I know they really aren’t a mountain boot. The pack I got was an Easton Fullbore XT 5600 and hope it works (found it pretty cheap on camofire). As for tent I got an ALPS zephyr 3 man for the both of us and we can split the load, sleeping bag is Big agnes encampment 15 and pad is big agnes inulated Q or something like that. We are looking at the last week of archery season in Colorado, was going to go the week prior but found out muzzleloader season is going on so figured we would push it back.

As for unit we are thinking about 161 up by the Wyoming boarder but really have no clue where to go. Part of the reason we chose that area or one of the surrounding units is because 1 we are doing OTC since I doubt I get drawn for a mule deer tag and 2 if we go to that unit or 14, 15 is we can make it in 12 hours and probably get an extra day to hunt. so if anyone could help us out with some info on any of those units we would really appreciate it. we have to do all of our scouting through the internet and maps because we cant make it out there before season due to work. we aren’t looking for anyones honey holes just some general info on where to start and where to look and maybe make some friends that possibly hunt in the area. thanks for any help guys and any info you are willing to pass along.

First Club Shoot

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

So, my 11 year-old son and I are going to our first club shoot on Saturday. We’re pretty excited. Just trimmed up a couple sets of new arrows tonight and we’ll get some more practice in on Thursday after school.

I’ve had my 2009 Elite XLR since January and have really liked shooting it. Haven’t shot from 40 until last Saturday though. I managed to hit the target with all my arrows, so I’m hoping I won’t embarrass myself! Lol

Just wondering if y’all have any tips for first time shooters at a field archery shoot?

I just bought my first bow, but there’s a flaw on a limb. Is this dangerous?

It’s been strung and unstrung once, never fired though.

I’ve never owned a bow before and was reading up in how to inspect limbs for damage that can happen from use, what to look for. Delamination, splintering, and stuff like that.

I found a site recommending feeling over every inch of the limbs for any rough spots (there shouldn’t be any)

Anyway, I tried that with mine, which I just got and noticed a line on the side of the limb of a rough patch of spongy looking wood. (Or possibly just wood that has some deep pits that are full of foamy glue/air bubbles?)

Is this something that would be a problem, or just a normal thing?

This is a samik sage recurve.

first bare bow 300 shoot

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

i got a new carsage recurve on Christmas, so i decided to shoot a 300 round today to get a baseline of my instinctive shooting skill level with this bow. i shot a 221/300 with 9 X’s. i was wondering if that’s a good score or if its bad. what would be the average 300 bare bow score?i did notice that my groups and accuracy are worse than if im shooting stumps or if im shooting 3d targets

First day back, thanks Double Lung Archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

So I finally got out with my new bow. PST Stinger X for those of you new to the party.

Have not shot a bow since 1990 or so but did a ton of research while I was over in Afghanistan. Here is a picture of the bow at the Fort Hood archery range.

Bought the bow from a place in Iowa called Double Lung archery. Great price and customer service. Can’t say enough about how good Steve and DLA is. Bow came paper tuned and top pin set for 20 yards. This is my best target of the day.

Well the good news is the group is great and just off the target at 20 yards. Bad news is I was aiming at the spot way over on the right lol. Not all my groups were this good but they were consistent in the same area and not to far off this one in size.

All in all a great way to spend the lunch hour. Forgot to say the range is about two minutes from my work.
