Vanes VS Feathers for HEAVY arrows HEAVY bow

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

So before people jump down my neck saying "you don’t need that"….I am well aware…I just wanted it and saved until I could have it..

Ok so that being said, I am trying to set up a set of arrows for my new bow(2015 Hoyt Nitrum 30/28.5/90# Draw(yes 90#)

I am going to be setting up a set of Easton Axis Dangerous Game 250(17.7gpi).

I’ll be cutting them at 29" with the 75grain brass inserts. Then topping them off with 210grain German Kinetics fixed blade Broadheads. Looking for total arrow weight of 800grains..

My question is, for a setup with this heavy of an arrow, what would be my best bet for the tail? Feathers or Vanes? 5", 4", 3", 2" etc….

If you have any input or experience, please let me know.

Thanks

switching to feathers need advice

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

I don’t know why but I am suddenly very drawn towards using feathers instead of plastic vanes. I was given some 2" razors to experiment with. But here is my question. I shoot with a blade and I’m going to use the feathers for my indoor setup. I have 200 grains out front. Can I get away with a straight fletch on my jig or do i need to get some offset? And if I do use an offset will the contact the feathers make with my blade cause any problems? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

Nock Angle with Helical Feathers

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

First of all. Happy New Years and Thanks for all the previous advice posted on my Arrow questions. I am using Carbon Express II 800 with 5" Helical Feathers. They seem to be spined well on the Samick Sage 30# at my 29.5" draw length. One thing I noticed is the calf hair rest is getting chewed up a bit on the shelf. My nocks are set up so that the cock feather is perpendicular to the riser facing out with reference to the rear of the feather. Or if looking at the back of the arrow the nock is vertical with the string (obviously) and the edge of the rear shield feather is exactly 90 degrees to the nock. This is what i have read is correct for off the shelf. But, With the Helical fletching, the leading edge of the feather is several degrees further left or counter clockwise on the shaft. It is apparently striking the hair rest on the shelf and chewing it up a bit. My question is should I rotate the nock a bit and trade off between the leading and trailing edges of the LW Feather to avoid this? Maybe a straight Fletch would be better on these thin carbon shafts anyway but I have to deal with these arrows I have. Another thing i need to mention is that I did not completely cover the entire shelf with the calf hair plate. I cheated and cut it in half and placed it on the apex of the shelf where the shaft would contact it. Is this not correct? I have also seen some hair rests and strike plates set up with a small gap between them for the fletching to move through? Is this effective? The good news is, it is New Years Eve and I just shot my first 75 arrows at 7 yards. No major problems, I only missed the entire bag once, (the wife will find that hole in the extra fold out table next gathering), I had some 3" groups so apparently I did remember something from my childhood and that Bear Fiberglass Recurve I got when I was 7 years old? It was very Cool. I was so excited to shoot that I forgot to put a nock on my string so i just placed arrows perpendicular to the shelf. Who cares when you shoot your first arrow at six feet away from a great big $ 50 dollar yellow bag with a hornet on it, and you have really now idea where the arrow is going to go. Yep, 7 years old again…. Priceless.
