Will 10ft per second make a big difference?? #archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

Hi all,

I currently have a Mathews HTX, and am getting the itch to upgrade it. I do like shooting it, but sometimes that speed demon conscience gets in my mind and I start to question whether it is fast enough.

I have a short draw length (26.5) and shooting a 426grn arrow with a draw weight of around 66lb. Going by the back country archery calculator the arrow is traveling at 260fps. If I upgrade it to a Halon, and continue to use the same set-up, the archery calculation says I should gain an extra 10ft per second.

My maximum shooting distance at animals is 45 yards.

Will 10fps be valuable for me in my situation? Or will 10fps, when shooting less than 45 yards, make little difference?

PS. Don’t tell my wife I am thinking about buying a new bow!

E-Z-V Sight difference #archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

"Archery" and "Bowhunting" are very different sports…Most every "archer" I know can stand in their yard and pound golf ball size groups in their deer targets AT 20Yds! Some shoot tiny groups at long ranges, 50,60yds and beyond BUT, if they have spent time hunting, they ALL have COMPLETELY missed animals in bowhunting situations…WHY? 93% of shots gone bad are distance judging related. Try randomly walking around your yard, pull up and shoot! $ 500 sights cant do what the E-Z-V Sight does…it will get you within 5% of the distance, 2yds at 40. That is a double lung, ten ring, ethical kill shot EVERYTIME! Don’t MISS an opportunity THIS year! E-Z-V Sight is the computer to the typewriter! We won’t build anything to make bowhunting easier, reduce the magical challenge is offers BUT, nearly everyone will guess and shoot…The E-Z-V Sight makes us BETTER bowhunters!

Can Nocks make a difference…. I think so, just my opinion… #archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

I was shooting today and was finished tuning the bow. Paper, Bareshaft, Modified French, Walkback and Finally Broadhead Tuned, yes, it may have been overkill but I am very confident in that if I miss it will be because of me not the bow. Anyway I started shooting Bareshafts to get groups and identify any shafts that need to be Nock Tuned. I want all of the shafts within the 10 ring, well I had three arrows outside the 10 ring to the left so I grabbed those three and was going to nock tune them then realized that they had different nocks than the others. There is a total of 9 Bareshafts, 6 had accunocks the other three had factory nock. Out of curiosity I decided to put on three Accunocks to those three shafts and they hit the 10 ring. I reshot all 9 bareshafts, this time all with Accunocks and they all hit within the 10 ring. Shot a third group of nine and again all hit within the 10 ring. I was just trying Accunocks, not really committed. I am now committed, so much so that I ordered 36 more Accunocks today. Yes a nock can make a difference.

whats the real difference

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

shooting a 26” arrow with 3 2” vanes and an arrow with 3 3” vanes. Both shots great thru paper. This is for hunting only. I am going from 27” draw to 28” draw as soon as my mods come in. Shooting fixed broad heads also. Been shooting the Blazers ever since they came out but trying the 3” Vanetec and they seem to be doing good. Would you use the 2” Blazers or the 3” Vanetec, thats the choice ?

Mis-aligned vanes, do they make a difference?

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

For the purpose of this thread, talking about indoor short distance recurve archery.

The purpose of the vane is to cause drag to help straighten up the arrow in flight. In fact when you tune the bow you use a bare shaft to test how well your bow is tuned…

So if a bare shaft will group with a set of arrows which are fletched, how much real difference would mis-aligned or skewed vanes make to the group on the target.

I get at 100 yards, you would start to see a difference, but at say 25m would mis-aligned vanes make any real difference at all?

Head say it should not, but I have always been over critical of vanes I fletch…

Really interested in what others think…

Is there much difference with a 2″ fletching vs 4″?

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

I know someone will say there’s hundreds of threads on this subject but figured I’d see what you all have to say. I need to order a new set of XT Hunters but been thinking about going back to a 3 or 4" vane vs my blazer vanes. Is there much difference actually in accuracy between the different sizes? Even had the thoughts of possibly using feathers to hunt with. Is it worth switching? Thanks

Axel to axel – what’s the real difference?

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

Strictly from a bowhunting standpoint, what’s the real world difference between a bow with a 31" brace height vs. a 35" brace height? Is an inch or two going to make that big of a difference in accuracy at bowhunting ranges / conditions?

“Fast Limbs VS Powerful Limbs” (is there a difference?)

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

Gentlefolk…this particular topic/thought fell (actually more like "came crashing down" LOL!) upon my oh so abstract mind as I gazed at my new-to-me 1975 Herters recurve….smugly taking in the extreme curvature of it’s heavily bowed and hooked limbs…as by comparison makes my Bear look like Twiggy as there sits Marylyn Monroe….loaded with static tension as just the act of plucking the string to hear the high pitched note it makes produces a smile upon my face…with the 14 strand Flemish string sounding more like taunt fast flight rather than the B50 Dacron it is….as I attempt to decide which hunting arrow to commit too…which at this point I know will either be my .600 spine 29" long beman classics w/ 100gr stingers tipping the scales at 365grs or?…my 30" long .500 spine GT3555′s tipped w/ 175gr Simmons TigerSharks tipping the scales at 435grs…and I’m almost certain I’ll choose the latter but….

In this thought process…and since I don’t currently have access to a chronograph?….my mind begged the question…

I wonder if some bows were designed with an emphasis on power rather than speed….IOW’s?…are there some "fast limb designs" that will whip out a 350gr arrow like nobodies business yet dramatically bog down when nocked up with a 500grainer?….while conversely there may be some "powerful limb designs" that might not whip out a lightweight arrow quite as fast yet exhibit very little differential in nocking up a heavy weight arrow?

To my understanding?….I believe this falls under the realm of a bows "Stored Energy"…which by the sound of things this Herters has gobs of…and would secure my decision making as described above.

T.I.A. and L8R, Bill. :cool2:
