Weird question about deer salami?? #archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

Sorry prob not the right place but after freezing salami and thawing in the fridge how do you guys get rid of the wet texture that you seem to have after thawing. Let it sit uncovered in fridge? Or just let it thaw in original packing longer? Any thoughts? Thanks

I am hunting in north central arkansas this year and was curious to how old everyone thinks this buck is. He’s the biggest bodied deer on the property I have pictures of so far. Just wanting to take the oldest most mature deer first. Thanks

Sometimes…..I really HATE deer. #archery

So it is the late Michigan turkey season, which is longer in duration but the trade-off is pursuing pressured birds. Due to work and other commitments, I only have Saturday mornings to hunt and have gone to a small tract of private ground where I also deer hunt in the fall. Last Saturday morning I had a short encounter with a doe group of 5 that took some interest to my 4-panel portable blind, but moved off after a few minutes of head bob and staring. Not a bit of reaction to my decoys or calling, just the "blob" of the small camo blind suddenly in "their" home territory.

Well I get out this morning a bit after 6 and set up about 75 yards from my location last week on the west end of the small 2-3 acre field that was planted in corn last season. With my Dakota jake and Avian-X hen in place about 18 yards out, I waited a bit and did some soft calling about every 15 minutes. During my 4th sequence, I noticed a turkey head and neck of a hen about 100 yards out on the south side of the field and then a second one appeared. They were disinterested in my calling and decoys, but are the best "live bait" for a gobbler and it ramped up my interest. Shortly thereafter, I caught movement out of the corner of my right eye and out steps a doe at about 50 yards. Three more followed and just like last week, they honed in on the little camo blind and immedately got hinkey….staring, head bob, foot stomp routine.

That went on for about 10 minutes before the later 3 went back in the woods but the contrary first doe just stood their staring. After another 5 minutes, she wandered away and then turned back to stare for another 5 minutes. Finally, she went into the woods and I was relieved that it was over. Not 2 minutes late, they all came back out with another in tow….for a total of 5 just staring at my location from about 60 yards out. Just then I saw a large dark shape at the southeast corner of the field as a tom is strut appeared. A few of the deer noticed him and the two hens, so now deer were right in the middle of a potential turkey scenario. One of the deer staring at the strutting tom decided it was curious and started walking right at him, which deflated his strut and he immediately backed off the field into the woodline. The stinking deer had literally run off the tom and then went back to staring at me. It progressed from distracting to absurd to oddly comical to downright frustrating as the morning played out.

At that point I had enought and stood up, waving my arms to run the deer off. Of course the two hens scurried off as well and ended my morning. When I looked at my phone, the deer had been pestering me for over 45 minutes and my opinion of them drastically changed during that time. This fall sitting in my treestand, I will get some pay-back for their contrite behavior in May. A turkey hunter never forgets……mark my words DEER….:pukey:

Deer found feasting on human remains

By Margi Murphy, The Sun May 9, 2017 | 11:01am | Updated

Forensic scientists have caught a deer munching on human remains for the first time ever.

The animal was snapped gnawing on bones by a motion-sensitive camera set up by researchers in Texas.

Footage captured the deer nibbling at rotting corpses inside a 26-acre “body farm” – a section of woodland designed to allow researchers to watch cadavers decompose and discover which animals they attract.

Raccoons, turkeys, foxes and vultures are typically seen feasting on the bodies.

But this is the first time a white-tailed deer – widely believed to be a herbivore – has been captured munching on human remains.

The corpse had been outside for 182 days.

Experts from the Forensic Anthropology Research Facility at Texas State University watched as the animal held “the bone in its mouth like a cigar” on two occasions in January 2015.

A paper recently published in the Journal of Forensic Scientists, claimed this was the “first known photographic evidence of deer gnawing human remains.”

It added the deer was likely chewing on the bones because it was deficient in minerals and that they had no evidence it had eaten any flesh.

It’s thought deer probably chomp on animal bones during winter to “obtain minerals absent in their diet” like calcium, sodium and phosphorous.

What do deer eat?

Deer are herbivores and typically eat plants, fruits, acorns, and nuts.

They switch to grass and evergreen plants in Autumn, when food is scarce.

When things get desperate in winter, they munch on fallen leaves, twigs, bushes and other woody plants.

They have been reported to gnaw on animal bones but this is believed to be when they are deficient in certain nutrients.

One of the best deer hunting stories I’ve ever read. I had a subscription to Field&Stream for years and of all the stories and articles I read in it over the years, I’ve always remembered this one more than any other.
