Double Jointed Dwarf Deer in Trail Cam Video! #archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

I’ve been camtrapping for many years and this is a first for me! Once I got the initial footage at the end of 2019, I relocated a few cameras and got additional footage. Below is a compilation of some of the clips. Her behavior in the recent clips is very playful. If anyone knows what causes this feel free to chime in.

First deer of the 2020 season #archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

I made contact with the first deer of the 2020 season. Got a good solid broadside hit on a doe this morning. I was disappointed in the Buick’s performance. I got zero penetration and no blood trail. I am thinking I need to increase my feet per second to get better results. 58.6 feet per second/40 mph wasn’t enough. I could also put more weight up front to increase the FOC.
(I had dodged this same deer 4 times in the same spot this winter. Today her and I finally made contact. After the impact the deer was nowhere to be found).

Hey guys, I shot two does yesterday and both of them have orange on their noses and corners of their eyes. Has anyone seen this before or have any idea what it is?

Cows and Deer #archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

So been hunting a place off and on for 4 years. 600 acre parcel. About 180ish farmed, 300 crp and remainder lets just say is 120 is crp/pasture/ravine/dry creek bottom type area (but not in crp). First 3 years there had been cows in the 120 at least for most of the season. I tended the shy away from that area due to this but it has the water. Water is multiple spots. Ponds, depressions but mainly a large concrete water tank that as far as I can tell is heated and never freezes. I bounced between this area and another property with most time at the other property so first hand information is spotty aside from my cameras on this portion. They pulled the cows out mid November last year and set my cameras near the water for the first time. The deer are definately using that much more and arguably the best spot on the whole place. Quite a few day time pictures of the bigger deer in the area. Couple pictures attached of the 3 biggest I am seeing. There is at least one or 2 more of equal caliber in the region but I cant seem to capture a good direct picture of them.

In my experience the neighbors tend to shoot the deer when they hit 3.5 yrs old and certainly at 4.5. I am tagged out since early October and truthfully I only anticipate shooting 1 deer every 3 years off this place. My time gets split among 3 locations and they others tend to have larger deer but if these guys stick around this year and I can keep them more in my area they could be great next year.

Now, I have brought a second feeder in to set up. Its not a normal deer feeder, I am converting a 3-5 ton grain bin into a feeder. I paid $ 700 for it (zero rust and great shape) and a grain auger. My cost is about $ 350 in material and good 8 hours to auger the cassions and mix the concrete to set it. Not an easy ordeal. Once set, its where it will sit there for years to come and I wont move it. I have another 400 acre parcel I initially intended to use this on BUT when the cows are not there this 600 acre place looks great I am realizing. Toying with the idea of setting it up there or buying another grain bin to set up. Question, I can set it up and fence around it to keep cows out but are cows going to keep the deer out of the area? Yes, the cows to tend to congregate in this area when when they are there. I have no control over the cows and who knows how things will go with cows year to year. Might not be there for a few years or might be there every year.

Basically, how bad are the cows going to screw me up? Its not feedlot density, but a lot more than just a few cows. I would guess 20 or 30 but its just a guess. A lot more than just 5 or 6 cows. They also seem to trample the tall grasses/crp type stuff and vegetation in the area. I don’t have any data/experience from years past how the deer were using this area when cows were present.

First deer with a bow #archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

I am pretty excited about this! I just shot my first deer with a bow last night. It is a spike, nothing super special, but it is going to eat just fine. It was way more exciting than shooting a deer with a rifle, wow, way more exciting. Talk about up close and personal! Backstraps and heart are in the fridge ready for dinner tomorrow night.

I spotted him first at about 50 yards. He looked up at me when he was at 40. Stared at me for what seemed like 5 minutes. I was in my full UA forest camo, standing on my X-Stand hang-on. Finally convinced himself things were alright and continued grazing on the acorns for a minute or two. I picked up my bow from the Third Hand Archery holder, and he looked up at me again. Was able to get the bow up and ready to draw while he was behind a big oak tree. Drew back while I had a chance. When he got to 21 yards, and into a small clearing from limbs and tree trunks, he looked up again, right at me. As soon as he dropped his head, I let one fly. I was holding the 80% letoff from my Xpedition Xcentric for only a minute or a half, but seemed like a lot longer. Arrow thumped, and he jumped.

The Iron Will S125 performed perfectly! Upper lung shot, the deer was facing me slightly. The arrow hit a little high, but went through the lungs and exited opposite side behind the rib cage. Buck only ran 40 yards after the 21 yard shot and fell dead. Was nice to see exactly where he went down from the stand. I was a little over a mile and a half into a Federal wildlife refuge, so I did call for some help dragging the buck to my truck. It was a late night, but worth it. I think next year, I am going to do some more scouting a little deeper into that refuge. I know there are some much nicer bucks back there.

Second to last pic is entry, last pic is exit.
