Using turkey decoys in the woods #archery

So this year I’m trying something different. I am focusing on hunting in the woods and hunting turkeys like I do deer instead of hunting field edges exclusively. Just pick a spot and sit there for a long time.

It almost worked out the first try. I setup on the top of a steep ridge. It’s a tough walk but I always had trail cam pics of turkeys there so I figured I would give it a shot. Within an hour I had 4 jakes come in down the ridge. They saw the decoys and got scared and hung up just out of range.

While the jakes came in I had some toms and hens come in from below me. They were 40 yards away but did not come close enough for a shot. The same thing happened a little later with a few more toms. All the birds were responding to my calls, even the hens. But they wouldn’t come close enough for a shot.

I was using a decoy with a jake fan and a hen decoy. They saw the decoys but wouldn’t come in. In fact, I think had I not had he decoys I’d have at least gotten a shot at one of the jakes. Am I better off not using decoys in the woods?

Guys that have both jake and strutter decoys…

To the guys that own and/or use both a jake decoy and a strutter, how do you decide which to use? I know strutter decoys work well when you are hunting a dominant bird, but if you are on a new property, out of state trip, etc and have no history with any of the birds, how do you decide which to use?

Does anyone use them both at the same time? If so, what kind of a "spread" configuration do set them up in?

I currently have a DSD jake that I have used for a few years with good success, but I am adding a DSD strutter to my arsenal this spring, but Im not sure how to decide which to use.. Can I put both out in front of the blind, or would just one of them be better?

Decoys

I will be doing my first DIY turkey hunt in April. I have been looking at getting a decoy and some calls but need some advice. I don’t have money to spend 100 on one decoy. I need to keep this under a 100 for decoys and calls. Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.
