Crazy Story of my South Dakota 10pt

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

I have been hunting hard since Sunday out here in South Dakota. Yesterday was windy and foggy all day with very little action. This morning the wind was blowing about 25 most of the morning. I get a call from my dad a 9am saying he shot a buck. I get out of my stand to go help with the recovery. His buck ran 50 yards up the shelter belt and died. We got it loaded up and out by 930. He saw two decent bucks this morning, so I decided to go sit in the stand for a couple of hours hoping to catch another buck cruising. I wasn’t sitting there for 30 minutes and this guy comes out of no where. I went to draw back and I forgot to push my release trigger forward on my Spot Hogg wise guy and the arrow shot off my string going about 10 yards. The buck doesn’t notice and I grab another arrow and put one right through his heart at 23 yards.

I shot the buck in the same spot by dad shot his and he died 20 yards from where his died. This will be one of my most memorable hunts for sure.

Paper Tuning (Crazy Suggestions?)

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

Good Morning All,

I just got back into archery after a 10 year break, college and paying for it kind of got in the way. I jumped back in with tons of enthusiasm and purchased a Hoyt Faktor 30 (black) based off of recommendations I found on here, and shooting one at my local archery shop. So far I love the bow, but I am trying to get everything all set-up the way I want it. The bow is initially set for a 27" draw, at 55 pounds. I also purchased Carbon Express Maxima Red 350 grain arrows with 100 grain tips.

As a first step to make sure I was doing things right, I scheduled a lesson at a local archery shop. The place where I purchased my bow doesn’t do lessons, so I started looking for another location. (By the way I live in Wisconsin, about an hour between Milwaukee and Madison) My first lesson was good, and he gave me a lot of great pointers which I think are already helping me. He made me cringe though when he told me I need to make some major changes with my equipment and to schedule a paper tune.

I am fine with a paper tune, in fact I was thinking the same thing, but here were his suggestions even before the tune.
- Shorten my draw length (ok, understandable)
- Shorten my wrist release (done, I shoot a tru-fire wrist release and already finger placement is better)
- Ditch my ARROWS, too stiff and they can’t tune them properly (wa wa what????)

I have NOT gone for the paper tune yet and will be doing that this Saturday, but after talking to a couple of my buddies, they think these guys are already full of hot air. I am just wondering if this is a big concern to anyone else, or if this all sounds fairly straight forward. I have redacted the names of the shops involved to protect the innocent, but will share if anyone has any insight on local shops. My biggest concern is already replacing my arrows after a month, and going by what was recommended from a local shop. Any thoughts? Questions I should be asking when I go in for my paper tune? Should I go to a different shop and get a second opinion?

Thanks for all the help,

Joe

Spirals are driving me crazy!

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

I’ve recently built up a 2012 Vantage Elite Plus with spirals to match my Vantage Elite Plus with GTX cams. Bows are exact same draw length, same draw weight, same letoff. The GTX cams tuned and shoot beautifully. The spirals draw and hold just the way I’d hoped. Problem is, the arrows are coming out sideways. At 20 feet, I’m getting a almost 2 inch high left tear. I’ve been setting up and shooting Hoyts for about 20 years, but this is my first experience with spirals. I’ve done everything I can think of. I’ve yoke tuned in the correct direction and even tried the opposite direction. I’ve adjusted nock height in both directions and moved my center shot everywhere from 56/64" to 32/64" and nothing significantly moves that high left tear. Swapped limbs side to side and top to bottom. Played with cam syncronization. I’m almost to the point of just getting another set of GTX cams and then I’ll have two identical bows. Always wanted to try spirals, but I can’t tolerate that kind of arrow flight. Love the feel of them, but I can’t have arrows porpising and fish tailing like that. Any ideas or suggestions?
