DIY Black Bear Alaska – Advice Needed

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies on Amazon.com

Greetings,

I almost put "advice welcomed" in the title but that’s too cool… I believe I *need* it. Gotta quickly explain how I got to this point first so there’s no confusion…

Oldest brother and father passed in 09 and 11, it was a game changer and I realized life was short so I’m going full pedal to the metal from now until whenever. A friend invited me to Alaska for the salmon run last year for 2 weeks. I stayed five and wandered for 3, made a bunch of new friends. One of those Alaska friends hunted 30yrs, bears for 10, mostly over bait.

I got inspired to make Alaska a yearly trip, even possibly move here very soon (oh yeah, I’m in Anchorage right now… 2 in Oregon, and 5wks in AK). I got home last August, immediately joined a great fish n game club, indoor archery league, winter league, practiced a minimum 5 times/wk, picked all the experienced brains that I could, spent hours studying – buying- selling – trading equipment, reading, discussing, watching 100s of videos, reading through forum discussions, etc.

My performance, accuracy or equipment is excellent. I score 415-420 indoor targets, practice 3ds regularly and have used the indoor hunting simulator w movement and obstacles etc…. Its my situation that concerns me most.

I asked my Alaska friend if he’d set up a black bear hunt. He agreed. Somehow there was a misunderstanding on when baiting season ended so he changed to spot and stalk instead. Then he got a job and had to back it completely. I’m already in Anchorage to play around a bit before the salmon run in soldotna from the 14th onward, expected to do that black bear hunting on the 10th-14th.

However, here’s where it starts to get interesting:

I’m also acquainted w the guy who’s cabin area we were going to be at (trappers creek, petersville area). I ran into him a couple days ago and he was kind enough to invite me along to the cabin with his family on the 4th of July. After about 150mi drive, is 18mi gravel, then 7mi by ATV….

…. designated "PREDATOR CONTROL ZONE".

yay, right?

Ok, so, he won’t be hunting with me but I’ll be able to either sit in a stand that’s over one of several recently dismantled, cleaned up bait stations (which I’m sure still smell like Anise) or I take an ATV about 1/2 to 1 mile out, find a high point and start glassing. If I harvest a bear or need help, my friend will come get me or help me skin the bear but otherwise, I’m alone.

Ok, so I understand a lot of the basic stuff – compass, bug dope, rain poncho, hip waders, studied wilderness survival w tom brown jr, etc. I’m not a big gun guy other than target shooting for fun at the range and black powder, but he’ll be lending me a 3-something winmag for bear protection.

SO….

While I’m a pretty rugged guy in most respects, I’ve only got an easy turkey hunt to my experience yet here I am about to head "solo" into a predator control zone in deep wild Alaska to spot and stalk bear.

Questions:

1. Am I crazy? I think its exciting as **** and part of my "go big or go home" mindset but is this really too big too early? Only live once, right?

2. Am I over-imagining the bear encounter aspect? I talk to people who hike for years on sitka and other densely populated bear habitats and they tell me they rarely ever run into them. What’s the reality.

Yes, there’s a bit of fear and trepidation but that’s part of the excitement of mastering self and the elements.

So, do you have any suggestions or advice, they’ll be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
