IL bird down this morning – full video and pic heavy

I put in for 2 IL turkey tags and got drawn for 1st season and 3rd season. My first tag made some terrible soup, but by the end of my last day hunting, we had about figured them out. I wasn’t sure if I was going to make it back over for the 3rd season tag because it started the same day as our MO season. I decided last night to head over for the morning as it looked like probably the only good weather day left in my season. We decided to set up where we heard several birds the last time I hunted and as I got out of the truck, we found out they were already gobbling. We managed to get set up in the field adjacent to the little patch of woods while they gobbled the entire time within 100 yards of us. Soon we could hear some hens talking and even seen them fly down towards the closest 2 gobblers. I decided right then that I would be the most aggressive hen around there, hoping to get the hens fired up enough to come check us out. It worked, and soon we had two hens with us in the field. One happened to have a thick 10 or so inch beard.

It didn’t take long for one of the gobblers to follow them out along with another hen. What a sight he was with the rising sun behind us hitting his feathers! I will let the video tell the rest of the story:

A few pix. He was a great bird, with three beards of 11 1/8, 6 1/8, and 4 inches, 24 lbs even, and 1.25 inch spurs on both sides. He actually broke a spur on the deke but it was still attached.

Back from KS with bird #4 of the spring – pic heavy

I normally head to KS for the archery opening day, but this year drew an IL season 1 tag which started the same day so it would have to be week 2 before I made it this year. Because of several things, I had a day and half to make something happen before I had to head home and work for one day. That first day and a half hunt was not productive in terms of kills, but we had lots of jakes up close and a few toms just out of range. So, I drove the 6 hours home, went to work, then headed back. The first morning when I returned was just one of those days all turkey hunters look fwd to all year. The field I hunted the first couple days had been covered up with birds, but they were dispersing quick so we decided to walk into a place we hunted 2 years ago and set up where we sat then. We got all set up in the pitch dark and just as we were sitting down, birds gobbled close! Click the thumbnail for a short video of them gobbling as day breaks:

A little calling and they were definitely interested. Before long a couple was in the field with us strutting very slowly towards us. When a hen answered me in the woods, I kept at her until she got mad enough to come out and see what was up. She came right into the dekes and by this time a 3rd tom had joined the first two and they picked up the pace towards the real hen. Soon they were right in front of us, a few yards past the dekes trying to decide if they wanted to thump our strutter or jake, or follow the hen who had now lost interest.

I like to let them come into the dekes and get a little video and watch the show myself, but I was pretty sure these 3 were gonna chase some real tail so it was time to let it fly. You can see the green lighted nock on track for a good shot.

His buddies and one more tom turned to enemies quick and were on him before he could even make it to his death bed off the field edge.

I don’t get caught up in size when it comes to spring turkeys. To me, it’s either a jake, or a tom and what the measurements are end up just being chance. I am not gonna pass up a bird with an 8 inch beard waiting for 10, or whatever. But this bird appeared to be the best of the 3, and it is one of my biggest ever. He was 25 lbs even, 11" and 4.25" beards, with 1.5" and 1 3/8" spurs. I hunted a couple more days and blew a chance at another bird as he turned to leave the dekes, taking off his beard and some chest feathers! 18 hours of driving in a few days for this turkey but I love it and I’ll be back to KS before it all ends trying to get another.

Good luck to everyone else out there chasing birds. For those interested, I was using my Xpedition Xcentric and Hot Shot X-Spot release.

Big Bird Down !!!! (IOWA)

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

I have roosted this bird 4 or 5 times & my wife & I have had 3 or 4 close calls, but tonight everything worked like a charm.
With my wife out of town, I roosted him last night (again) & worked him this morning. But as luck would have it, he was coming in, but turned at about 40 yds & hooked up with his buddy, 4 hens, & 4 jakes.
Knowing where he liked to spend the night, I went back tonight, set the blind up in the fence line & waited for him come to his favorite tree.
Him & his buddy were following 5 hens (& 3 were already roosted just a short distance away) & 2 jakes on his way to the roost when he passed by the blind at 15 yds. My new HTR got it’s 1st kill !!!

28.80 lbs (on a State Certified scale), 10 1/2" beard, & 1 1/8" spurs Scored 72.25

NH bird down

It’s not my biggest, but it was a great hunt. I shot this Jake @ 21yrds after he chased the big Toms out of the field for the 2nd day in a row. The rage broadhead kicked his ass. My custom copper call from Wiggins game calls worked like a champ

Homemade Snaro Bird points!

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

I’ve been looking into getting some Snaro’s, but they are are a little too pricey for my taste. I was hoping to make my own, but my creativity is running a little low these days. Anybody have any pictures of ones that you’ve made or maybe even some ideas on how to make em? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!
