Montec unethically dull? #archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

For starters, I am a huge believer in my broad heads being as sharp as humanly possible, maybe a little too fanatical about it. In fact, I made my own leather stropping wheel for my bench grinder this weekend for this very purpose. Tonight I went over to my friends house to pick up his Montecs that he is going to use on his Montana Elk hunt next week. He has been bow hunting for a long time, but has never really even checked his broad heads to make sure they are sharp. In fact, he had already screwed the heads on his arrows and was just planning on using them out of the package when I called and offered to check to make sure they were sharp. To make a long story short, I picked up his (NEW) heads and was shocked at how dull they are out of the package. I can literally push hard straight down on the edge of the blade with no fear of being cut. NONE! Now, I don’t expect a mass produced head to be stropping sharp, but I would expect them to be at least sticky…

The crazy part about this is that I drove away from his house thinking, "how many guys wound animals because the broad head was moderately sharp at best, and how many animals are lost to poor blood loss because of it?" I literally think that his heads would punch through instead of slice… SOOOOO, I know that most guys won’t go as far as stropping, but here’s a heads up for ya to check those heads and make sure your afraid to run your finger across the edge. If your not, just keep them in the quiver…

Where to put blind? #archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

I need some help deciding where to put a ground blind. First I want to state that North is to the picture’s left and south is to the picture’s right. Also, this part of the property is on a slope/hill so the top of the picture is up hill and the bottom of the picture is down hill. I can watch this plot from my house every night and also mornings on the weekends as the purple arrow on the right is pointing in the direction of my house so I do know pretty well where the deer come from and what times. The area highlighted in green is a brassica food plot (3/4 acre) and the red shaded area is a clover/rye plot that I just started last weekend (which the deer love rye where I am so I can see the deer hitting that early part of bow season and then switch to brassica in the later part of the season. The yellow arrows are all the directions I see deer come from but mostly they come from the top areas. The number "1" designates where I had a ground blind last year but the problem is you can only see the top part of the food plot highlighted in red. However, since it is in the island of trees it can be very well hidden. I was wanting to move it to the area marked with a 2, this way you can see at least the top portion of both food plots but I’m concerned it could scare off the deer since that is the side of the field the deer typically enter through. The yellow arrows are NOT exactly where they may enter just the direction. I have found many different deer runs all over the field allowing them to enter all over the food plot. Next year I plan on downing some trees to help funnel them but not enough time for me to do it this year. They only come to this field in the afternoon. Thoughts?

Single bevel sharpening #archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

So for the life of my I can’t get my single bevel heads sharp. I have a DMT kit and am staring from coarse to extra fine but im having no luck. I am even using a marker to make sure im getting everything even. I have zero fear of running my finger over the blade. I can get it to cut paper but just barely. I know it’s something I’m doing but I can’t figure it out. I have watched some videos and have looked around and I feel I’m doing everything right. Something so easy looking should not be this hard lol. Any suggestions would be great.

Sitka Fanatic-Any regrets? #archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

I am close to pulling the trigger on a Fanatic jacket. I have used the Stratus set for years and love it. Late season and mid November in Iowa I tend to get a bit colder but nothing that is terrible.

I don’t like the Fanatic bibs as they feel heavy and tough to elevate my legs as I climb. At least when I tried them on. But I do like the jacket and wonder if simply adding that to my regimen and using my grey wolf woolen bibs with a puffy pant would work well? Alot of burrs here, too, so one more reason to hold off on the bibs but the jacket seems great for 30 and below.

Just wondering if anyone who owns the Stratus regretted buying the Fanatic or found themselves not using it like they thought they would in favor of the Stratus with layers.

Thanks!

Montec G5/ why all the hate #archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

Has anyone had any real problems with these broadheads. They seem to not get much love here on AT. I’ve always thought they had everything going for them, all steel, one piece, cut on contact. Also I know if something is too good to be true it probably is but do you really have to buy from Bass pro to be sure your not getting a counterfeit? You can get them on ebay for $ 35 W/free shipping but on Bass pro your looking at $ 40 plus shipping. I do believe they are made in china- is that why people don’t like them.

Poundage Drop #archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

From information gathered from a different thread I posted my decision has been to drop my bow from 70lb to 60lb. The last time shooting I gelt I was doing fine and quit when my arm shoulder got sore. That was now 4 days ago and I can barely full draw the bow.IDIOT!
So my question is – Will I need to redo my sight yardages? I have an HHA Optimizer lite.
It will be some time until I’m able to shoot again, this shoulder is darn sore,so I am unable to answer this question myself.

Short ATA, Long Draw #archery

Discount Prices on Archery Supplies Right Here

I am looking for some honest, knowledgeable, helpful feedback on short ATA bows and how it may affect my capability to shoot well with a long draw. I went to my local shop today to shoot a few bows as I need a new one so I can pass the one I’m shooting to one of my sons. I shot an Elite Ritual, Hoyt RX-1 and Hyperforce, as well as the Triax. None of them jumped out at me as being the one that picked me, but looking back on my session, the Triax stood out a little. I’m no fanboy, am currently shooting a Carbon Defiant 34, but am open to what will work best for me. The bows had no sight, so I’m concerned I’ll buy the Triax, then get it setup, only to find I lack accuracy. My draw length is 29.5, I’ll be drawing 70#’s. What do you guys think?
