In my experience the neighbors tend to shoot the deer when they hit 3.5 yrs old and certainly at 4.5. I am tagged out since early October and truthfully I only anticipate shooting 1 deer every 3 years off this place. My time gets split among 3 locations and they others tend to have larger deer but if these guys stick around this year and I can keep them more in my area they could be great next year.
Now, I have brought a second feeder in to set up. Its not a normal deer feeder, I am converting a 3-5 ton grain bin into a feeder. I paid $ 700 for it (zero rust and great shape) and a grain auger. My cost is about $ 350 in material and good 8 hours to auger the cassions and mix the concrete to set it. Not an easy ordeal. Once set, its where it will sit there for years to come and I wont move it. I have another 400 acre parcel I initially intended to use this on BUT when the cows are not there this 600 acre place looks great I am realizing. Toying with the idea of setting it up there or buying another grain bin to set up. Question, I can set it up and fence around it to keep cows out but are cows going to keep the deer out of the area? Yes, the cows to tend to congregate in this area when when they are there. I have no control over the cows and who knows how things will go with cows year to year. Might not be there for a few years or might be there every year.
Basically, how bad are the cows going to screw me up? Its not feedlot density, but a lot more than just a few cows. I would guess 20 or 30 but its just a guess. A lot more than just 5 or 6 cows. They also seem to trample the tall grasses/crp type stuff and vegetation in the area. I don’t have any data/experience from years past how the deer were using this area when cows were present.
